Jedná se o výroční literární cenu pro díla v žánru sci – fi nebo fantasy, které rozšiřují a prozkoumávají role pohlaví. Vznik této ceny iniciovaly v únoru 1991 spisovatelky sci – fi Pat Murphy a Karen Joy Fowler. Cena je pojmenována po spisovatelce sci – fi Alice B. Sheldon, která publikovala pod pseudonymem James Tiptree, Jr. Cena je udělována na Wisconu (Wisconsin Science Fiction Convention), srazu feministicky orientovaných příznivců sci – fi. Kromě uspokojení z ocenění obdrží vítěz finanční částku 1000 dolarů, originální výtvarné dílo speciálně vytvořené k této ceně a čokoládový podpis, který tradičně doprovází Tiptree Award. V roce 2019 byla cena přejmenována na Otherwise Award, důvodem přejmenování byly tragické události na sklonku života autorky Alice B. Sheldon, které vedly ke sporům ohledně vhodnosti pojmenování této ceny.
